Vuur heeft namelijk brandstof, zuurstof en hitte nodig om in stand te blijven. Brandbestrijding kan je dan ook op verschillende manieren aanpakken:<\/p><ul><li><strong>het weghalen van de brandstof:<\/strong> denk maar aan het weghalen van brandgevoelig materiaal uit een kamer waar een brand woedt, of het dichtdraaien van de gaskraan.<\/li><li><strong>verstikking:<\/strong> door de zuurstof weg te nemen of de brandstof af te sluiten van de zuurstof kan het vuur getemperd worden. Door de brand te smoren wordt de aanwezige zuurstof opgebrand en wordt er voorkomen dat er nieuwe zuurstof de ruimte inkomt. Denk maar aan het afdekken van een brandende kookpot met een branddeken.<\/li><li><strong>afkoelen:<\/strong> de meest gekende methode van brandbestrijding is uiteraard het blussen van het vuur met water.<\/li><li><strong>een negatieve katalysator:<\/strong> er zijn ook bepaalde zouten die, in poedervorm, werken als een negatieve katalysator die de verbrandingsreactie blokkeren waardoor het vuur dooft.<\/li><\/ul><p>De verschillende blusmiddelen hebben vaak meer dan \u00e9\u00e9n werking bij het blussen. Zo heeft water als belangrijkste effect de afkoeling, maar de nevenwerking is de verstikking van het vuur doordat er stoom wordt gevormd en doordat de brandstof bedekt wordt met een dun laagje water.<br \/>Bij het blussen met schuim is verstikking het eerste effect, maar er is tegelijkertijd
